Turkey Vultures.  Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, 4/2/2005.
We took a boat trip with Birding and Kayak Adventures out of Rockport-Fulton.
Their shallow draft boat, the Skimmer, can get up into the shallow wetlands
for rather different views of nature.  The tide was extremely low that morning;
the skipper was surmising that it might have been due to the strong windstorms
of the previous day.  The above

Broad-winged Hawk.  Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, 3/27/2005.
Broad-wings form huge kettles during migration season; we saw several 
hundred take off in the early morning, as the heat began to rise
off the fields.  Later in the day, you don't see them -- they're too high. * 801 x 600 * (270KB)

Other hawks seen on our trip.  
Upper left: Red-shouldered Hawk, San Antonio Botanic Gardens, 4/3/2005;
we got to see it up close, swooping down on a hunting foray, but sadly no pictures.
Upper right: Cooper's Hawk, Mustang Island State Park, 4/1/2005.
Lower right: White-tailed Hawk, Mustang Island State Park, 4/1/2005
(the camera's clock was about 13 hours slow).  We saw many white-tailed hawks
along the coastal barrier islands.
