Comment: Other hawks seen on our trip. Upper left: Red-shouldered Hawk, San Antonio Botanic Gardens, 4/3/2005; we got to see it up close, swooping down on a hunting foray, but sadly no pictures. Upper right: Cooper's Hawk, Mustang Island State Park, 4/1/2005. Lower right: White-tailed Hawk, Mustang Island State Park, 4/1/2005 (the camera's clock was about 13 hours slow). We saw many white-tailed hawks along the coastal barrier islands. Lower Left: Swainson's Hawk, Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, 4/2/2005.

Broad-winged Hawk. Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, 3/27/2005.
Broad-wings form huge kettles during migration season; we saw several
hundred take off in the early morning, as the heat began to rise
off the fields. Later in the day, you don't see them -- they're too high. * 801 x 600 * (270KB)
