Pyrrhuloxia. South Padre Island (Convention Center), 3/30/2005.
These birds look like a female cardinal on Rogaine -- note the higher
crest than a cardinal. They don't range north of the Rio Grande Valley.
This was the only one we saw on our trip, and unfortunately it wouldn't

Painted Bunting (immature). Goose Island State Park, 4/1/2005.
Too bad we didn't see the adult male of the species -- vermilion front,

Olive Sparrow. Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, 3/28/2005.
This fellow was chattering away in the bushes like a wren (in fact we mistook
it for a wren until one of the park rangers informed us otherwise). A little later
it hopped right up to us, to the point that the camera was having trouble
focussing on it -- I had to step back! This bird is rather specific to
the southern tip of Texas, southward into Mexico. * 600 x 600 * (299KB)
